What are ice dams?

Ice dam formation is caused by the continuous freezing and thawing of runoff from snow because of either the gutters being clogged and poor ventilation of the attic. The real problems occur when the water from the melting snow starts to back up the roof and under shingles above the ice dam. This could cause permanent damage to the roof, insulation, and drywall inside the home. A small leak could go unnoticed for long periods of time causing costly damage.
